Picket Fence Repair Tips
There is nothing more American than a picket fence, as it delineates and frames a property line without reaching too great a height. Installing a picket fence though on the unlevel ground is slightly trickier than when working with level ground, however, you will be happy to hear it does not result in too much blood, sweat, and tears, the same can be said when it comes to picket fence repair.
Over time, every wooden picket fence becomes worn and will need some repair. Below are some useful tips that will help you to perform minor repairs to your picket fence, ensuring it remains attractive for years to come.
Painting Your Picket Fence
At the start of each spring, consider painting your fence to protect it from weathering and damage. Strip away any peeling or cracked paint with a wire brush, and then sand the pickets or posts that are attached to the fence railings.
Once you have prepped the surface for painting, use a latex primer and paint. Latex paint will allow moisture to pass through and will help the wood maintain its beauty.
Replacing Damaged Pickets
Remove any loose pickets with either a screwdriver or a claw hammer, depending on the fastener that was used to secure the picket to the railings. If your picket fence was built using manufactured pickets, take a trip to your local home improvement or hardware store where the pickets were bought to buy a replacement picket.
However, if the fence was built by hand, take off a good picket and then trace it on a piece of ½-inch thick plywood. Then reattach the good picket, sand and paint the replacement one, and attach it to the space the damaged one was in.
