DIY Fence Installation Checklist: What to Do Before You Begin
Before you purchase any supplies or decide on a weekend to install your fence, if you are not hiring a professional fence contractor, there are a few things you have to take care of beforehand. First, you will need to find out where your boundary lines are. This will avoid any future disputes with neighbors that claim your fence is on their property.
There are several ways that you can try to find your property lines. Such as checking the deed to your home, or visit your local zoning department. Sidewalk lines and streetlights will also provide you with a general idea of where your property lines lie, however, you should always obtain official proof. Whether you are installing a new fence or simply replacing the old one, you must inform your neighbors what you are planning.
Gather Your Tools and Supplies
Once you have taken care of your pre-installation checklist, the time has come to get your supplies.
To plan the location of your fence, you will require a level, tape measure, and some string. You can use small wooden batter boards also that will mark the location of your fence corners. You will need to get a post hole digger also, these can be obtained from your local hardware store. It resembles a large corkscrew that is about the size of a shovel. You will also have the option of hiring a mechanical auger to dig the holes, this will make the job easier.
Then, you will need building supplies for your fence. You will need cement and gravel to set the fence posts, a shovel and wheelbarrow will come in handy when you start to move the dirt and gravel around.
Remember also to purchase the fence posts and panels, you can choose materials such as vinyl, wood, metal, or chain link depending on what your aesthetic is.
